Goodbye face sheets, hello leave-on masks! Herein enters Radiance Renewal Mask; the latest concoction aimed at improving brown spots and fading red marks from past breakouts by no-nonsense skincare brand, Paula’s Choice.

First off, I have to say that the bottle looks like it was designed by Apple. Gorgeously simple. I want to carry it around like an iPhone. Indeed, by housing the product in this manner, concerned consumers may be sure that the beneficial ingredients within won’t be exposed to the elements without; whereby it will remain stable for the entire duration after its initial opening (approximately 12 months thereafter). Directions suggest to apply this as the last step in your evening’s skincare routine. Note the “do not rinse” warning. This is a leave-on mask!

The pump works well. One push offers a generous amount of product, enough for the entire face and neck area. Furthermore, this bottle packs in 50 ml worth of product. Perfect for someone like yours truly who applies his skincare products as if he were frosting a cupcake. The product itself is milky-white, with a luxurious lotion-like texture that spreads easily. While I usually find most masks to be a bit too rich for my acne-prone, combination skin, I like how Radiance Renewal Mask absorbs into my skin in under a minute, and doesn’t leave it looking greasy or feeling icky; which most moisturising masks heavy on plant oils and emollients tend to do. For this reason I surmise that it is unlikely to cause breakouts, and is possibly suitable for all skin types; even the sensitive people should be able to use this without turning into a ripe tomato. But of course everyone’s skin is different, and so those with a tragic history might want to test it out on a small patch of skin first. I on the other hand, slathered it on like it was a ‘buy one get one free’ deal.

In typical Paula’s Choice fashion, the bottle comes loaded with chemistry extravaganza; all of which you may be sure, research has shown to benefit skin. Among the top listed is niacinamide; ingredient of the moment, that also goes by the names of vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid. Niacinamide is a powerful cell-communicating ingredient with benefits that rival retinol – which, sad to say, has fallen to number three this season, after snail secretion.

Niacinamide has an interesting relationship with the regulation of melanin production, which enables it to effectively improve the appearances of dark spots. There is also strong evidence pointing to its ability to help fade those pesky red spots we sometimes get (or in my case, always get) after a breakout. In other words, this product will do double duty for those with ‘mature’ skin also struggling with the occasional breakouts.

As a side note. Isn’t acne the worst? Indeed it is. But if you’ve read “The Post-Acne Revelation” it will tell you that there are in fact multiple benefits to having pimples.

Anyway, aside from darling niacinamide (the name of which makes me think of cinnamon spiced hot chocolate on a wintry evening), Radiance Renewal Mask also includes a plethora of anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, moisturising agents and skin-repairing ingredients, all of which, combined, and with on-going use, will make a marked difference to your overall complexion. Still, I would like to give a shout out to another interesting ingredient top in the recipe that makes up Radiance Renewal Mask, namely arbutin. Arbutin is a plant extract and derivative of hydroquinone (a first class brown spot blaster), and so shares similar blasting properties like its brethren; great news for those who can’t tolerate hydroquinone.

All-in-all, Paula’s Choice Radiance Renewal Mask is a first rate leave-on mask with much to offer; especially to those with stubborn red marks and/or dark spots that simply won’t go away with their current skincare routine. Like any of Paula’s Choice powerful boosters, this product can be that additional ‘something’ which turns the scales in your favour. So treat yourself to this silky mask pizzazzed with top-notch ingredients research has shown to be effective at toning down colored imperfections: red for the young, brown for the old, and red and brown for the young at heart. With on-going use you can expect to see less uneven skin tone and brighter days. It’s never too late to be beautiful!
