Dhara Dhevi Cake Shop is a luxury pâtisserie with a flagship cafe in the palatial Lanna-style, Four Seasons-like resort of the same name in Chiang Mai; with additional stalls in glitzy shopping malls throughout Bangkok, like the mammoth Siam Paragon. It can be thought of as a distant cousin to the sweet tooth haven, Mandarin Oriental Shop; for Dhara Dhevi was previously under the Mandarin Oriental banner.
Famed for its exquisite varieties of macarons, worthy of supplying the extravagant parties of Marie Antoinette, the cake shop is one of the ritziest institutions for lavish desserts in Thailand.
The flagship cafe in Chiang Mai is decorated in the style of a high tea salon with Lanna and Victorian influences. There are indoor and outside seating arrangements. Inside, a train of display fridges showcases the pâtisserie’s claim to fame; pretty petit fours, artistically pleasing cakes, dainty éclairs, and as a matter of course, the legendary macarons, for which an entire stall is dedicated to its exhibition.
For this late afternoon visit at the Dhara Dhevi Cake Shop, a few select pieces were chosen; though not without some difficulty it should be noted, for the varied and irresistible dainties made it hard, epicurely speaking, to narrow down the desired choices. Including, a lychee mousse cake of a glossy pastel pink cast; the taste redolently sweet and the texture exquisitely melt in the mouth. On the side, a plate of select dainty macarons of a beige range hue; perfectly crafted meringue shells, sandwiching rich ganache and tasty jam. All the sweetness downed with a petit pot of smooth chamomile tea.
